A Word from the Author…

Nearly 45 years of fascination with Polish theatre and the great art of Polish acting — that’s how it all began.
It was 1978, with Andrzej Wajda’s staging of November Night (Noc Listopadowa) at my beloved Stary Teatr,
featuring the unforgettable Jan Nowicki as the Grand Duke.

“Bacilus teatralis” — that’s what the great actor Stanisław Igar once wrote to me.
Because once you’re infected with theatre, it becomes a chronic condition — but a beautiful one.
It heals the soul, gives strength, and brings joy.

I wish you a meaningful journey through the volumes of our series — Portraits of a Friend —
featuring remarkable individuals who, though now mostly part of history, continue to shape the story we return to again and again…
To the beautiful roots of our tradition — in theatre, and beyond.
